| Harborough Athletics Club was
founded in 1984 by International athlete Dick Callan, Pete
Leach and Stewart Harrison and has grown to well over 200
members including a burgeoning junior section of some 70 to 80
young athletes. The club has a wide age and ability range
and caters for both the serious competitive athlete and those
merely running to keep fit. It competes on road, country and
on the track in events to appeal to most tastes. The cross
country fixtures include the North Midlands League and County,
Midland and National championships as well as the National and
Midland Relays. Road races feature on the calendar throughout
the year with both the Leicester Road running league and the
East Midlands Grand Prix and a club championship series that
is contested over 7 featured races over differing distances.
The London Marathon also proves to be an attractive springtime
goal for many club members. Participation in the Midlands and
National road relays is always popular as is the Round
Leicester Relay in August, in which HAC finishes three teams
of thirteen most years. The senior men’s team has just won
promotion to Midland Track and Field league Div 5 and both Men
and Women’s veteran teams compete in the Midlands Vets Track
and Field League, with the men notably winning the B cup final
for the second year in a row recently.
New members are always welcome. Phone Dave Oram (Seniors)
on (01536) 712505 or John Thompson (Juniors) on (01858) 463541
or simply turn up at one of the club training nights. The
junior members meet on Mondays at 5:30pm at Welland Park
School and are coached by Toni Boa, Stuart
Beard and Traci Edwards whilst the senior members meet on
Tuesdays at 6.45pm at the leisure centre and train in groups
run by Dick Callan, Alan Fordham and Dave Oram.
In addition to this Pete Leach runs a training session from
the leisure centre on Thursdays, also at 6:45pm. |
