HAC Flying High

On Sunday, a strong-looking Harborough AC Senior Track & Field team made its way to RAF Cosford for the second League meeting of the season, and offered formation flying at its very best through a number of top-three place finishes. Across the ‘A-string’ events, there were wins for two of the Clubs ever-reliables; with Sean Fenwick victorious in the 3000m, and Jason Pitcher in the 800m. These triumphs were echoed in the ‘B-string’ by Andy Robinson and Jake Watson respectively – the latter setting yet another Personal Best – while Dan Worley marked his comeback with a typically exuberant run to victory in the 3000m Steeplechase, and Roy Barber again lowered his PB for the 100m on his way to first across the line. There were second-placed finishes for Dan Worley (400m Hurdles ‘B’); Matt Driver (1500m ‘B’); Sean Fenwick (3000m Steeplechase ‘A’); Emily Taylor (400m ‘A’); Sarah Ward (800m ‘A’); Karen Brooks (3000m ‘A’); and Jill Roginski and Marise Taylor (both Javelin, ‘A’ and ‘B’ respectively).
The Astley brothers – Chris and Jamie – again added good points to the team total with strong runs across the sprints, while Dan Worley extended his day’s exploits to a total of seven events, adding the Long Jump, Triple Jump, Discus, High Jump, and 110m Hurdles to his earlier events! Roy Barber also produced another PB in the 200m, before combining with Chris and Jamie Astley and Matt Driver for fourth position in the 4x100m relay. There was a very welcome debut from Steve Hillam in the Long Jump and Triple Jump, while Jill Roginski and Marise Taylor continued the points scoring in resolute fashion over a number of field disciplines. Scott Speller marked his last outing for the Club before his move abroad with a gutsy run in the 1500m. The final word, however, should be reserved for Emily Taylor, who contributed 20 points to the cause, across four events; further lowering her own Under20 and Under17 Club Record for the 200m in the process!
Club Track & Field Captain, Andy Robinson, paid tribute to the team, commenting: “There were a lot of very encouraging performances out there today, particularly from the younger athletes. But it’s great to see such a blend of Club athletes across all the events, and everyone who took part can take a huge amount of credit for a tremendous team showing today!”

Meanwhile, one day prior, three of the Club’s youngsters made a distant trek to Kidderminster for the first Heart of England meeting of the season. Niamh and Molly Watson continued to underline their undoubted promise and talent: Niamh placing second in the ‘A-string’ of both the Under11 75m and 600m, and Molly mirroring this for the ‘B-string’ 75m, but going one better in the ‘B-string’ 600m. Representing the male demographic, Ewan Muircroft began his season with a noteworthy display, taking second place in the Under13 Javelin, and fourth place for the Under13 1500m.
